About Newark, Ohio
Newark is a city of 49,934 people and the seat of Licking County, built where the forks of the Licking River meet, 40 miles east of Columbus. Long before any town stood here, people of the Hopewell culture spent the years from 100 AD to 500 AD raising earthen mounds and walled enclosures across the ground that is now Newark and Heath. Together they formed the largest such complex in the Ohio River Valley.
Gen. William C. Schenck led the first European-American settlers here in 1802 and named the village for his hometown in New Jersey. On July 4, 1825, Governor Clinton of New York and Governor Morrow of Ohio turned the first dirt for the Ohio and Erie Canal at the Licking Summit near town. Railroads came next: a line linking Pittsburgh with Chicago and St. Louis stopped here on April 11, 1855, and the Central Ohio Railroad tied Newark to Columbus on April 16, 1857.
- Earthworks of world rankThe Hopewell earthworks cover about 206 acres. The Octagon and Observatory Circle, joined to Observatory Mound, stretch nearly 3,000 feet, and the Octagon by itself could hold four Roman Coliseums. For years the Octagon was leased to a country club, but a new arrangement in 1997 opened it more to the public, and in January 2025 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site with full public access.
- Heisey glass from 1896A.H. Heisey & Co. began pressing glass in Newark in 1896, shaping it to look like costly cut glass so more families could afford elegant pieces. Skilled workers also cut and etched it, and over the years the company introduced new colors and patterns. Heisey shut its plant in 1957; an Ohio historical marker says the company refused to turn out a cheaper machine-made product. Collectors organized in 1971 and opened the National Heisey Glass Museum in 1974.
- The Arcade of 1909Newark's Arcade opened in 1909, built on the pattern of new European shopping buildings that gathered many stores under one roof. It became one of the city's first successful retail emporiums, an early form of the indoor shopping mall, with 60,000 square feet of space.
- Pike's scout on the LickingJohn Sparks, a private in the 1st United States Regiment, guided, scouted and hunted for both of Zebulon Pike's expeditions between 1805 and 1807, journeys that reached the headwaters of the Mississippi and the far Southwest. He spent his last years on the north bank of the Licking River, and people in Newark remembered him going about the town barefoot. Sparks died on February 28, 1846, and was buried in a cemetery where Mount Vernon Road meets Gregory Drive.
