About Heath, Ohio

Heath is a city of 10,412 people in Licking County, about 30 miles east of Columbus. Long before any town stood here, the Hopewell people lived on this ground through the first century CE and raised large earthworks, among them burial mounds now protected within Moundbuilders State Memorial, at the city's northern edge.

European-American settlers did not arrive until the nineteenth century, and most of the county was turned over to farming. Newark Air Force Base was established here in the years after World War II. Heath became a village in 1952 and elected Richard Hoback as its first mayor. The village had 2,426 residents in 1960 and 6,066 by 1965, and that year Heath was chartered as Ohio's 196th city.

  • The Great CircleThe Great Circle Earthwork belongs to the Newark Earthworks, a complex once covering more than 3,000 acres that was surveyed for the Smithsonian Institution before 1850. The circle is 1,054 feet across, with 8-foot walls around a moat 5 feet deep. Farmers clearing fields destroyed some of the earthworks, but this one survived. It is a National Historic Landmark, and in 2006 Ohio made the Newark Earthworks its official prehistoric monument.
  • The Ohio Canal began hereOn July 4, 1825, New York's governor, DeWitt Clinton, a Master Mason, came to this spot and lifted the first spadeful of earth to start work on the Ohio Canal. The Ohio Canal Groundbreaking Site joined the National Register in 1973.
  • 35 years of Air Force workFor 35 years Newark Air Force Base housed the U.S. Air Force Aerospace Guidance and Metrology Center. When the base's run ended, the same work went on in Heath at AFMETCAL and at the Air Force Primary Standards Lab, which a contractor operates.
  • Indian Mound Mall, 1986Indian Mound Mall opened in Heath in 1986. It was the first indoor shopping mall Licking County ever had, and it is still the only one. By 1990 the city had grown to 7,231 people, and it remains one of only three cities in the county.
