About Newcastle, Maine

Newcastle began in the 1630s as Sheepscot Plantation, one of the earliest European settlements in Maine. Attacks destroyed the village in 1676 and 1689. The area then sat mostly empty for about 40 years. In 1730, Colonel David Dunbar resettled it. He named it for the Duke of Newcastle, the King's chief secretary.

Frances Perkins was the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet. As a child she spent summers at her family homestead in Newcastle. She called it her true home and later lived there. The homestead was named a National Monument in December 2024.
