About Damariscotta, Maine
Colonists moved upriver from Pemaquid around 1640 to settle what is now Damariscotta. In 1676, during King Philip's War, attacks drove off or killed the settlers. Rebuilding and new raids took turns through the French and Indian Wars. Once peace came, the town grew as a trade center and incorporated in 1848.
Abenaki people left oyster shell heaps along the Damariscotta River that are 2,500 years old. The Whaleback Shell Midden, one of these heaps, is protected today as a state historic site.
