About Newfane, Vermont

Governor Benning Wentworth chartered this town in 1753 as Fane, honoring John Fane, who was the 7th Earl of Westmoreland. The French and Indian War kept settlers away, so no town meeting met in time. The charter was voided. Wentworth issued a new one in 1761 under the name New Fane.

Newfane first built its village and county buildings on top of Newfane Hill. Winter travel up the hill proved too hard. In 1825 the village moved to the flat land below. Until 1882 that new village was called Fayetteville, after the Marquis de Lafayette.
