About Townshend, Vermont

Governor Benning Wentworth chartered Townshend in 1753 and named it for Charles Townshend, a British official. The French and Indian War stopped settlement plans. Proprietor John Hazeltine finally led settlers into town in May 1761, and the grant was renewed in 1762.

Townshend's school opened in 1834 as Leland Seminary, one of the oldest secondary schools in Vermont. Its brick building burned in 1894, and an octagonal wooden building replaced it right away. It became a tuition free public school in 1968.
