About Newport, New Hampshire

Newport is a town of 6,299 people and the county seat of Sullivan County, built where the South Branch flows into the Sugar River. Governor Benning Wentworth granted the land in 1753 under the name Grenville, after the British prime minister George Grenville, but fighting in the French and Indian War kept settlers away. In 1761 the town was incorporated as Newport, honoring Henry Newport, an English soldier and statesman.

Six young men from Killingworth, Connecticut, spent the summer and fall of 1765 clearing land and raising rye here, then went back home for the winter. They returned in June 1766 with two more men, five of the eight bringing families, and that group made the first permanent settlement. Unhappy with a state government far off beyond the mountains, Newport and 33 other river towns broke away to join Vermont in 1781, but George Washington dissolved that union in 1782 and the towns returned to New Hampshire.

“All accounts agree that they arrived in town Saturday night; that they were detained by a bad place in the road on Pike Hill, where they camped for the night; and the following day, after accomplishing the remainder of their journey, they spent in religious worship under the shadow of a pine tree which stood just south of the A. Pease residence.”

  • 120 water wheels on the SugarColonel James D. Wolcott started Newport's first cotton mill in 1813. Mill owners in Claremont, Sunapee and Newport then formed the Sunapee Dam Corporation together in 1820, and its dam evened out the river so machinery kept running in dry spells. The plan worked, and before long the river was turning more than 120 water wheels. By 1859 the town had 2,020 people, three woolen mills and two tanneries.
  • Scythes for the Panama CanalThe Sibley Scythe Company opened in Newport in 1842. Its blades were used to cut back the jungle while the Panama Canal was being built, and the company stayed in business until it closed in 1929.
  • Mary's lamb and ThanksgivingBorn in Newport in 1788, Sarah Josepha Hale later taught school in town. Her father opened The Rising Sun tavern in 1811, and two years later, in 1813, she wed David Hale, a lawyer, at the tavern. She wrote "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and edited Godey's Lady's Book for forty years. Beginning in 1846 she asked five presidents for a national Thanksgiving, and after 17 years Abraham Lincoln agreed. A state marker on Route 103 honors her.
  • County seat since 1827Built in 1825 and 1826, the three-story brick Eagle Block at 64 Main Street is downtown's oldest commercial building. After fire destroyed the town hall and courthouse in 1885, Newport put up the Opera House in 1886 to a design by Claremont's Hiram Beckwith. It's on the National Register as the Town Hall and Courthouse.
