About Sunapee, New Hampshire
Sunapee is a town of 3,342 people in Sullivan County, along the west side of Lake Sunapee. It began as Saville in 1768, was later known as Corey's Town, and then took the name Wendell for John Wendell, one of the Masonian Proprietors. It was incorporated in 1781, and in 1850 the legislature renamed it Sunapee. The name is Algonquian, from suna for goose and apee for water. Native people called this the Lake of the Wild Goose because the shape of the lake resembles the bird, and Sunapee Harbor sits where its beak would be.
Sunapee first made its living from factories, and one of them could turn out 110 clothespins a minute. When the factories faded, visitors came for the lake instead, and grand hotels went up along its shores. Steamboats carried guests from one hotel to the next until automobiles reached the area, and by 1915 most of the large ferries had stopped running.
- The Amenia White, 1887The Woodsum brothers put their steamer Lady Woodsum on the lake in 1876. In 1887 they launched the Amenia White, 101 feet long with room for 650 passengers, the largest steamer ever to run on Lake Sunapee. Sunapee Harbor and Georges Mills were among the main landings where the boats stopped.
- Three lighthouses on one lakeIn the 1890s the Woodsum brothers also built the lake's three lighthouses: Loon Island, Burkehaven and Lakeside. The Lake Sunapee Protective Association looks after them today. No other lake in New Hampshire has three working lighthouses, and no smaller lake in the country has more than one.
- Named for a Navy sailorGeorges Mills, in the northeastern corner of town, lies on a strip of land with Lake Sunapee's northern tip on one side and Otter Pond's southern shore on the other. The village takes its name from Daniel G. George, who served as a sailor in the Union Navy.
- A governor born in 1869John H. Bartlett was born in Sunapee in 1869, grew up here and went to the local schools, and later became the 57th governor of New Hampshire. In 1955, three years after he died, the Governor John H. Bartlett Fund was created to award a scholarship every year to students from Sunapee.
