About Newport, Shelby County, Ohio
Newport is a community of 169 people in Cynthian Township, in Shelby County, Ohio. Its lots were platted in 1839 along the Miami and Erie Canal, and the town still stands beside the old canal line, where State Routes 47 and 66 now cross.
- Platted in 1839Newport was laid out in 1839 on the Miami and Erie Canal. The canal has long since closed, but the town it drew is still here in Cynthian Township, and the 2020 census counted 169 people living in it.
- A Sabbath school in 1872Newport's Methodist Episcopal church grew out of a Sabbath school started in 1872. Dr. Reaner, Mrs. Henry Sweigart and her daughter organized the school, and by the time the History of Shelby County was published in 1883, that small class had become the heart of the town's M. E. congregation.
