About Newtonville, Indiana
George W. Totten opened a small store in Newtonville about 1858, but he quit after a year. The town was not formally laid out until March 1865. Surveyor Ira Broshears then marked off fourteen lots for the landowners, among them Bezaleel Newton. Shoemaker George Rumple sold goods early and rose from almost nothing to comfort.
Dr. Adye of Newtonville was born in Jamestown, New York, in 1837 and was largely self taught. He practiced medicine and served as a school director in Newtonville. During Morgan's raid he was a first lieutenant of the Home Guards, who won the battle of Painter's Creek near Owensboro, Kentucky.
