About North Andover, Massachusetts
North Andover is a town of 30,915 people in Essex County, south of the Merrimack River. In 1634 the Massachusetts General Court reserved the country around Lake Cochichewick for an inland plantation. On May 6, 1646, the Rev. John Woodbridge gave the sachem Cutshamekin six pounds and a coat for that land, and it became Andover, with its center right here.
As farms spread south and west, settlers quarreled over where the parish church should stand. In 1709 the General Court ended the dispute by creating two parishes, one north and one south. The two grew apart over the next century, and on April 7, 1855, the North Parish was incorporated as the town of North Andover.
“As long as I can get water to turn my wheel, I shall continue to run my mill.”
- Captain Nat's flannel, 1813Born in the North Parish in 1786, Nathaniel Stevens sailed from Salem, then came home and kept a grocery near the church. In October 1813 he began making woolen cloth at the upper fall of Cochichewick Brook, and Abraham Marland advised him to switch to flannel. Abbott Lawrence urged him to shut the mill and save his money, but Stevens kept going. His mill used fifty pounds of wool daily at first and four to five hundred by 1849.
- Girls at Franklin AcademyFranklin Academy opened in 1799, and the town's 1880 history says no incorporated school in the state had taken girls before it. Its two rooms held a preceptor and a preceptress. Elizabeth Palmer, the first preceptress to teach real studies, married the preceptor Nathaniel Peabody in 1802. Mrs. Horace Mann, Mrs. Nathaniel Hawthorne and Elizabeth Peabody were their daughters. The academy closed about 1853, and its building ended up as a stable.
- Anne Bradstreet's townAnne and Simon Bradstreet came here with the earliest settlers. A London printer issued her poems in 1650 under the title The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America. In July 1666 fire destroyed the family's house. She died in 1672, and many historians think her grave lies in the Old Burying Ground, at the corner of Osgood Street and Academy Road.
- A magistrate who fled in 1692During the witch trials of 1692, more than fifty people from the town were accused. The magistrate Dudley Bradstreet refused to sign any more warrants, and he had to flee.
- Houses from before 1720Abiel Stevens, one of Andover's early major landowners, built his house on Salem Street in 1710, and it still holds its 18th-century shape, with a rear lean-to and front porch added in the late 1700s. Capt. Timothy Johnson, who led Massachusetts troops at the 1745 Siege of Louisbourg, built his gambrel-roofed house about 1720.
