About North Reading, Massachusetts

North Reading is a town of 15,554 people in Middlesex County, on the north side of the Ipswich River. In 1651 the town of Reading was granted land beyond the river, and six families had settled on large farms there before 1680. Some of them lived about eight miles from the only meeting house in Reading, so in March 1696 the town agreed that they could stop paying its minister once they had one of their own.

A petition for a separate parish failed in 1711, but two years later, in 1713, the North Precinct was created. Sergeant George Flint, who gave an acre of land for a meeting house, chaired its first meeting on November 27. The meeting house went up on the Common in 1717, and Rev. Daniel Putnam of Danvers became the first minister in 1720. The parish stayed part of Reading for 140 years, until it became the town of North Reading on March 22, 1853.

“many times labor under great difficulty in coming to God's house, oftentimes cannot come, and seldom can bring their children.”
History of Middlesex County, 1890
  • The first minister's houseTo lure Rev. Daniel Putnam from Danvers, the parish granted him twenty acres and raised him a house 28 by 19 feet, but he supplied his own nails and glass. The Rev. Daniel Putnam House, dated 1720, has a central chimney, and one chamber keeps its original plaster and paint. Now town property, it houses the North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society and was added to the National Register in 1990.
  • Pigeon Joe's hopsJoseph Holt, born in the North Parish in 1754, marched with Captain John Bachellor's company at the alarm of April 19, 1775. After the war he farmed at least a thousand acres near the Andover line, growing hops on a large scale and sending much of the crop to New York state. Selling pigeons in Boston earned him the nickname Pigeon Joe. When he died suddenly in February 1847, his son Benjamin kept up the hops and the pigeons.
  • Flint Memorial Hall, 1875Charles F. Flint, born on the family homestead in 1808, poured effort and money into the Salem and Lowell Railroad, which reached North Reading by 1850, and became its president. After his death in January 1868, his widow Harriet N. Flint spent about $20,000 on a hall to house town meetings, town officers and a public library, presenting it to North Reading on October 21, 1875.
  • A shoe shop on every houseSmall boot and shoe work had started by 1820, and by 1850 nearly every house in town had a shed or shop attached for making shoes. The cheap footwear went south to clothe enslaved people, so the Civil War wiped out the trade. North Reading sent 137 men to that war, seven more than its quota. By the early twentieth century the town lived mainly on milk, apples and fruit.
