About North Augusta, South Carolina

North Augusta is a city of 24,379 people in Aiken County, and a small part of it reaches north into Edgefield County. It sits on the Savannah River's north bank, facing Augusta, Georgia, across the water and the state line. Two settlements came before it: Campbelltown, founded in 1780 by John Hammond, and the antebellum town of Hamburg.

The modern city was the dream of James U. Jackson. In the 1890s he, his brother Walter and a group of New York investors formed a business they called the North Augusta Land Company. Its first purchase came on March 24, 1890, when Mattie Butler Mealing sold it 5,600 acres, and later deals raised its holdings to 6,500 acres. Jackson made several trips to New York to raise money for the town and for a bridge to Augusta, now named the James U. Jackson Memorial Bridge. North Augusta was incorporated on April 11, 1906.

  • A winter resort, 1903 to 1916The Jackson brothers built the Hampton Terrace Hotel, a luxury resort that opened in 1903. Northerners came for the mild climate and the good train service, and the hotel's wealthy seasonal guests helped the young town's economy grow. Fire destroyed the hotel on December 31, 1916.
  • Growth in the Cold WarDuring the Cold War, the Savannah River Plant was built south of town. The city's population nearly quadrupled, and North Augusta grew from 772 acres to 5,139 acres.
  • The founders' homesRosemary Hall, the home of James U. Jackson, joined the National Register in 1975. Lookaway Hall, where his brother Walter lived, was listed in 1992, the same year as the B. C. Wall House. The Charles Hammond House was listed in 1973.
  • Watergate and Gomer PyleNorth Augusta's notable people include Frank Wills, the security guard who uncovered the Watergate break-in, and Jim Nabors, the singer and actor who played Gomer Pyle. The singers Brenda Lee and Sharon Jones are also on the list.
  • Home of the Peach JamEach summer the Riverview Park Activities Center hosts Nike's Peach Jam for boys and the Nike Nationals for girls. The country's best high school basketball prospects come to town for the tournaments, and college coaches come to watch them.
