About North Greenbush, New York
North Greenbush is a town of 13,292 people in Rensselaer County, with the Hudson River along its western edge. Its land once lay inside the Manor of Rensselaerswyck and Albany County, until Rensselaer County was formed in 1791. On February 23, 1855, the old town of Greenbush was divided, and North Greenbush and Clinton, today's East Greenbush, were created at the same time.
The new town was larger then, reaching into what is now northern Rensselaer and southern Troy. Its first settlers came in the early 1620s to Bath, on the river, though most early farms in the rest of the town appeared just before the Revolutionary War. Bath became a village in 1874, and in 1902 it was annexed to the city of Rensselaer.
- Blooming Grove becomes DefreestvilleThe southern hamlet was first known as Blooming Grove. Mail and travelers kept mixing it up with another Blooming Grove in Orange County, so around 1830 it took a new name from David M. De Freest and his family, who kept a tavern there.
- A church in 1794Wynantskill, in the town's northeastern corner, was settled near the close of the 18th century. Its Dutch Reformed Church was founded around 1794, and a post office followed in 1820. The hamlet sits on the Wynants Kill, the largest creek in town.
- Route 4 straightened in 1931In 1931 the road from Troy to East Greenbush was widened and straightened as US Route 4, and the older winding stretch it bypassed became today's Bloomingrove Drive. From the 1940s and 1950s, homes and chain stores replaced farms along the new road. In the 1960s Interstate 90 arrived, and with it the Patroon Island Bridge, which made Albany an easy drive. Exit 8 finally gave the town its own interchange in 1996.
- The chip plant that wasn'tRensselaer Polytechnic Institute began building the RPI Tech Park on Route 4 in the 1970s to help new businesses grow, and it now holds over 1,000,000 square feet of offices. In the late 1990s the state pushed the park as a site for a computer chip factory. By October 1999 it was one of nine sites still in the running, but residents worried about traffic and the environment, and the town council voted to end the review.
