About North Platte, Nebraska
North Platte is a city of 23,390 people and the county seat of Lincoln County. It sits where the North and South Platte Rivers join to become the Platte River. General G. M. Dodge laid out the town for the Union Pacific Railroad in November 1866, and it took its name from the North Platte River.
Congress approved a transcontinental railroad in 1862, but by the close of the 1865 building season the tracks had reached only Fremont. Crews finished the 275 miles from Fremont to North Platte in 1866. The new town was the end of the line from that December until track reached Ogallala the next year, and it has been a railroad town ever since.
- Buffalo Bill's Scout's RestIn the 1880s the Wild West showman Buffalo Bill Cody built his ranch, Scout's Rest Ranch, just north of town. The ranch is now a National Historic Landmark. His house is the centerpiece of Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, a living history park about Cody.
- The Canteen of 1941During World War II, troop trains passed through North Platte. Starting in 1941, volunteers from the city and nearby towns came out to meet them. Tens of thousands of people took part, serving coffee, sandwiches and dessert to nearly seven million servicemen. That made the North Platte Canteen one of the biggest volunteer efforts of the war.
- The world's largest rail yardUnion Pacific's Bailey Yard, inside the city, is the largest rail yard in the world. The eight-story Golden Spike Tower lets visitors look out over it all year. Passenger trains stopped running in 1971, but the railroad is still North Platte's biggest employer, with more than 1,700 workers.
- Nebraskaland Days every JuneEach June the city holds Nebraskaland Days, a celebration of parades, rodeos, concerts, art shows and food that draws more than 100,000 visitors a year. The Miss Nebraska pageant, a preliminary for Miss America, also takes place in North Platte every June.
