About Northfield, Vermont

Northfield is a town of 5,918 people in Washington County, set in a valley of the Green Mountains. Vermont granted the land on November 6, 1780, and issued its charter on August 10, 1781, taking the name from Northfield, Massachusetts. Yankee families from Connecticut, Massachusetts and older Vermont towns settled here over the following decades.

Four villages took shape as the town filled in. South Village, busy with small shops, came first, and Center Village, where the churches, the town clerk's office and the first post office stood, became the heart of town life and politics. Factory Village grew up around the woolen mill, and Northfield Falls was prospering by the late 1820s. When the railroad came through in the 1840s, Factory Village became the busiest of the four, and its people asked the legislature for a government of their own. The Village of Northfield was incorporated on November 14, 1855.

  • Governor Paine's railroadHundreds worked for the line until it changed hands in 1852 and moved its headquarters to St. Albans. Its 1852 brick depot still stands on Depot Square.
  • Norwich University since 1866Fire destroyed the struggling university's barracks in Norwich, so in 1866 it moved to Northfield. Called the Birthplace of ROTC, the school admitted women to its Corps of Cadets in 1974 and is the town's largest employer.
  • Three bridges in a quarter mileOn Cox Brook Road near Northfield Falls, three covered bridges stand close together. The Northfield Falls Covered Bridge of 1872 uses a Town lattice truss 137 feet long over the Dog River, and the Lower Cox Brook bridge, over another stream, is in view. The Upper Cox Brook bridge lies farthest west. The 1872 Slaughterhouse Covered Bridge also spans the Dog River, and the 1899 Stony Brook Covered Bridge is thought to be Vermont's last historic king post truss.
  • From granite sheds to Darn ToughSlate quarries boosted the town through the 1860s and 1870s, and its first granite shed opened in 1889. By the start of World War I the sheds employed over 525 people, but they closed one by one until the last, Cetrangolo Finishing Works, shut in 1999. In 1978 Marc Cabot rebuilt an empty mill here for Cabot Hosiery Mills, which began making Darn Tough socks in 2004 and employed about 200 people by 2016.
  • An international court in NorthfieldFrank Plumley practiced law in Northfield. In 1905 France and Venezuela picked him to serve as umpire of their mixed claims commission, and the commission held its sessions here in town. He went on to win election to Congress in 1909.
