About Williamstown, Vermont, Drawn Like an Old Atlas

Thomas Davenport was born in Williamstown in 1802 to a large, poor family. He trained as a blacksmith in a Williamstown shop, then opened a smithy in Forestdale. There he built the world's first electric motor. He wound the first magnet with silk from his wife's wedding dress.

The town paid for a marble monument to its soldiers who died defending the country. It stands twenty-five feet high on a granite base, topped by an eagle with outspread wings. Seventeen names are carved on it.
