About Washington, Vermont
Washington began as Kingsland under a New York grant. It was named the shire town of Gloucester County, which covered the whole northeast of the state. New York's rule did not last. Vermont regranted the land in 1780, and the first settlers arrived five years later.
In 1770 New York chartered Kingsland and made it a county seat, though no one lived there yet. A log jail and courthouse went up at the head of a stream. That stream became known as the Jail Branch. In 1780 Vermont rechartered the town as Washington.
- Why the town center moved downhillEarly Washington was a hilltop town of small sheep farms. Its population peaked at 1,400 in 1840, then fell as wool declined. Families left the hilltop, and the center moved down along the Jail Branch. The railroad arrived in the 1850s and dairy farming grew.
