About Northville City, Michigan

Henry Ford opened the first of his Village Industries plants in Northville in 1920. He wanted rural people to have winter jobs while farmers could still tend their fields in summer.

Northville Downs opened in 1944 as the first harness racing track in Michigan to run at night. It was built where the Wayne County Fair once stood. Joe Louis trained on that ground in 1939 for a world championship bout later that year. The track ran without a break until 2024.

  • A Henry Ford plant in townHenry Ford bought a factory in Northville in 1919 and filled it with machinery from nearby plants. The Northville Valve Plant made valves for nearly every Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicle, all but the Continental. It closed and was sold in 1981.
  • How the town got its nameJohn Miller built the first mill in Plymouth Township between 1825 and 1828. Mill workers built their homes close by. The settlement was called Northville because it lay north of Plymouth.
