About Nunda, New York

Nunda, said "none-day," is a town of 2,688 people in Livingston County, on the county's southwest edge where it meets Allegany County. Its name comes from Nunda-wa-ono, the name used by a band of Seneca whose villages lay among the hills and valleys of the Genesee River and Keshequa Creek. The Seneca word has to do with hills, and people often translate it as "Where the valley meets the hills."

In 1790 two small Seneca villages faced each other across the Chautauqua Hollow Trail, the path that later became State Street. Settlers came around 1806, and in 1808, when just three pioneer families lived here, Nunda was formed out of the town of Angelica, before Livingston County existed. The place was first known as Nunda Valley until Charles H. Carroll cut the name down to Nunda in 1824, and in 1827 part of the town was taken to create Portage.

  • The canal yearsNunda grew quickly after its founding, from 1,291 people in 1830 to 2,636 in 1840. The building of the Genesee River Canal in the 1840s pushed the count to nearly 4,000. Boats used the canal through Nunda until 1878, and once it closed the town shrank, falling below 3,000 people by the early 1880s.
  • Nunda Township, IllinoisGustavus A. Palmer was born in Nunda in 1805 and later served as a colonel in the Patriot War. When the fighting ended he made his home in Illinois, and he named the place Nunda Township in honor of the town where he was born.
  • Spear in the CreekNunda's children attend the Keshequa Central School District, with younger students at Dalton Elementary School and older ones at a combined middle and high school in Nunda. The district takes its name from a Seneca word for the local creek, meaning "Spear in the Creek."
  • 200 years in 2008The town celebrated its bicentennial on March 11, 2008, two centuries after it was carved out of Angelica in 1808.
