About Oak Island, Texas
Oak Island is a community of 371 people in Chambers County, on the eastern shore of Trinity Bay. It lies between the east and west forks of Double Bayou, about eight miles south of the county seat at Anahuac, and it takes its name from a stand of oak trees that grew near the mouth of the bayou. The town itself is young: two men who developed real estate, Charles Troy and R. L. Hall, founded it in 1951 on ground that had been a fishing camp.
- A cotton gin in 1880Settlers worked this shore long before the developers arrived. In 1880 Joshua Harmon brought a cotton gin over the bay and set it up on the ground that is now Job Beason Park.
- Hurricane Ike in 2008Hurricane Ike struck the community on September 13, 2008. The storm left about 90% of the homes in Oak Island too damaged for anyone to live in.
