About Oak Park, Illinois

Oak Park is a village of 54,583 people in Cook County, on the western edge of Chicago. Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings, who had come from Yorkshire, England, built a house at Lake Street and Harlem Avenue in 1835. They moved into Chicago in 1843 so their children could attend school, then came back in 1855 and built a larger home farther east on their land. Neighbors called the area Oak Ridge, Harlem or Kettlestrings Grove, but another Illinois post office already used Oak Ridge, so the local office took the name Oak Park.

The railroad turned the farms into a suburb. Oak Park got its own depot on the Chicago and Northwestern in 1872, when about 500 people lived here, and by 1900 it had 9,353. The land was then part of the town of Cicero, but residents voted in a referendum to separate, and the Village of Oak Park was established in 1902. By 1930 it had 64,000 people and called itself the "World's Largest Village."

  • Frank Lloyd Wright's first 20 yearsIn 1889 Frank Lloyd Wright moved to Oak Park with his wife, Catherine Tobin, and he lived and worked here until 1909. He built his own home and studio, which joined the National Register in 1972, and designed houses such as the Walter Gale House. His congregation's church, Unity Temple, went up to his design between 1905 and 1908. Today the village holds the world's largest collection of Wright-designed homes.
  • Ernest Hemingway's first homeErnest Hemingway lived his first six years at 339 N. Oak Park Ave. A restoration in 1992 brought the house back to its 1890s Victorian look, and the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park now leads tours through it.
  • A steam engine in disguiseThe Chicago, Harlem & Batavia line began running in 1881, roughly where the Eisenhower Expressway runs now. Its small steam locomotives wore a false shell over their moving parts so they wouldn't frighten horses, and people called it the "dummy" line. Direct trips to downtown Chicago started in June 1888.
  • A dry village until 1973When Oak Park incorporated, no alcohol could be sold inside village limits. The rule loosened in 1973, letting hotels and restaurants serve drinks alongside meals, and again in 2002, when some grocery stores won permission to sell packaged liquor.
  • On an Ice Age shorelineAll of Oak Park sits on the shore of Lake Chicago, the Ice Age lake that came before Lake Michigan, and Ridgeland Avenue follows its old shoreline ridge. A slight rise through the village is one of North America's four continental divides, splitting the Saint Lawrence and Mississippi watersheds. Plaques mark it on Lake Street at Forest Avenue and in Taylor Park.
