About Oaklawn-Sunview, Kansas

Oaklawn-Sunview is a community of 2,880 people in Sedgwick County, on the south side of Wichita, west of where K-15 crosses 47th Street South. It grew out of the Korean War. Boeing's workforce reached its peak, Wichita was named a critical area by the Defense Production Administration, and emergency housing for defense workers was approved. Two firms took on the job as partners: Dallas's Henry C. Beck Company and San Francisco's Utah Construction Company.

  • 1,100 homes on 260 acresIn July 1951 a plat went to Wichita's city planners for Oaklawn. It laid out 1,100 single-family houses on a 260-acre tract, built to shelter the families of people working in the defense plants.
  • Sunview Heights, all rentalsThe same 1951 plan added 190 units in Sunview Heights, directly north of Oaklawn, and every one of them was meant to be rented rather than sold. Between the two neighborhoods, planners counted on room for as many as 4,500 defense workers and their families.
  • 100 families by July 1952The first houses went up to the southwest of the Boeing Airplane Company plant. On July 9, 1952, 100 families were already living there, and crews were completing 100 to 150 new houses every week.
