About Odessa, New York
Odessa was laid out about 1827 by Phineas Catlin, who owned the site. John Foster surveyed the village and suggested the name Odessa, and Catlin adopted it. Foster also ran the village's first store and tavern.
The elder Phineas Catlin received the land under Odessa as a reward for military service. In 1837, his son of the same name put up the first sawmill beside Catlin Creek. The settlement was first called Catlin Mills. In 1845, local businessmen John I. Lawrence and John Foster renamed it Odessa, with Catlin's blessing.
