About Dix, New York
Dix is a town of 3,723 people in Schuyler County, reaching from the southern shore of Seneca Lake to the Chemung County line. It was formed on April 17, 1835, out of the Town of Catlin, which then belonged to Chemung County, because Schuyler County had not yet been created. The new town took its name from the Hon. John A. Dix.
The Chemung Canal had been finished in 1833, linking the south end of Seneca Lake with the Chemung River. Its route followed the Catharine Creek Valley along the eastern side of Dix, and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal at the lake's north end tied the whole system to the Erie Canal. In 1842 the lakeside settlement now called Watkins Glen was incorporated as Jefferson and set off from the town.
- From Jefferson to Watkins GlenPart of the village of Watkins Glen, its west side, lies in Dix. The village began as Jefferson, the name it carried when it was incorporated in 1842. Glen Creek cuts through the Watkins Glen gorge and then through the village, and Townsend Creek flows into it inside Watkins Glen State Park, just west of the village.
- Formula One and NASCARWatkins Glen International, a motor racing track southwest of the village of Watkins Glen, sits in Dix. Over the years it has hosted both Formula One races and NASCAR Cup Series races.
- A log cabin in Beaver DamsBeaver Dams is a hamlet tucked into the town's southwest corner, with North Beaver Dams a short way north of it. The Coon Family Log Cabin, which stands in Beaver Dams, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
