About Reading, New York

The Roberts family left Adams County, Pennsylvania, in 1797 on an eight-week trip by boat and ox cart. The cart wheels were sawed from a large log. The family later moved to Reading. They had lived near Reading, Pennsylvania, so they suggested that name for the new town.

Sons John and James Roberts were the first blacksmiths in the region. Their first shop was an anvil set on a sawed-off oak stump in the open air. People joked that their shop took in the whole town.

  • First settlerJudge Dow built the earliest house in Reading in 1798 and harvested the first crops that year. He was also the first manufacturer in the county, making spinning wheels and chairs. His daughter Lucy taught the first school in his house in 1807.
