About Starkey, New York
Starkey is a town of 3,407 people in Yates County, in the Finger Lakes Region, with Seneca Lake forming part of its eastern line. Settlers may have arrived around 1798, but people were living here even earlier: in 1779 a scouting party from the Sullivan Expedition came upon a cabin north of Glenora with people still living in it.
- Formed in 1824Starkey was formed from the town of Reading, which lies in Schuyler County. It became part of Yates County in 1824, just a year after that county was created.
- Water power on Big StreamBig Stream, one of the most important streams in Yates County, runs east through Starkey into Seneca Lake. Early settlers used its current to power their work.
- William Eddy's settlementEddytown, north of Glenora, takes its name from William Eddy. He was one of the early settlers and led the way in settling that part of the town.
