About Milo, New York
Milo is a town of 6,803 people in Yates County, on the land between Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake. The Seneca people held this country before any Europeans came. Around 1788, members of the Universal Friends, a religious sect, began settling here.
The town was carved out of Benton in 1818, when this ground still belonged to Ontario County, and about 1,612 people lived in Milo by 1820. When Yates County was created in 1823, Milo became part of it. In 1833 Penn Yan, at the town's northern edge, incorporated as a village and stood apart from the town.
- Named for a Greek athleteThe town takes its name from Milo of Croton, a famous athlete of ancient Greece.
- The Crooked Lake CanalThe Crooked Lake Canal opened in 1833 and crossed part of northern Milo. Its route followed the Keuka Lake Outlet, the stream that drains Keuka Lake into Seneca Lake. The canal stopped working around 1877, and railroads took over its land.
- Mills on the OutletThe Keuka Lake Outlet runs east from Penn Yan through the northern part of the town. The hamlets along its banks carry the names of the mills that once used its water: Keuka Mills, Mays Mills, Milo Mills and Seneca Mills.
- Himrod and Milo CenterHimrod, a hamlet in the southeast corner of the town, began as Himrods Corners and was later shortened to Himrods before taking its present name. Milo Center, in the eastern part of the town, was first called Nichols Corners.
