About Penn Yan, New York
The village name Penn Yan is a compound word. It joins names from the two classes of settlers. Penn comes from Pennsylvanians, while Yan is short for Yankees.
German immigrant Charles A. Herrman founded the Penn Yan Boat Company in 1921. The company built boats of wood and later of glass fiber. It stayed in business until 2001.
