About Torrey, New York

Benton and Milo both objected to losing land for a new town. Its backers named it for Henry Torrey, a county political leader, to win his help. The plan worked. Torrey was formed on November 14, 1851, as the last town created in Yates County.

Settlers first came to Torrey around 1788. They belonged to the Society of Universal Friends. The group followed a former Quaker preacher who was known as the Public Universal Friend.
