About Romulus, New York

Romulus is a town of 3,203 people in Seneca County, set between Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes. Before the Revolution the Cayuga and Seneca nations of the Haudenosaunee held this land, and French Jesuit missionaries came through in the 17th century. In 1779 the Sullivan Expedition destroyed native villages here and drove many people from the area.

After the war the land was included in the Central New York Military Tract, which was set aside for Revolutionary veterans, and the first non-native settlers came around 1789. The town was formed in 1794, while the area still belonged to Onondaga County. A clerk who loved the classics named it for Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome. The town later gave up land to create Fayette in 1800 and Varick in 1830.

  • Kendaia burned in 1779Kendaia, also called Apple Town, was a Seneca village in what is now Romulus. Its own people destroyed it before the Sullivan Expedition arrived on September 5, 1779, so the soldiers found nothing to take. A hamlet on NY-96A near Sampson State Park now stands on the old village site and keeps its name.
  • The depot and its white deerThe Seneca Army Depot opened in 1941, during World War II, and became a major employer for Romulus and the rest of Seneca County. Through the Cold War it was one of the most important storehouses of bombs and ammunition until it closed in 2001. Inside its 7,000-acre fence, a rare herd of white deer developed naturally, one of the largest in the world. The grounds are now a private refuge and conservation center that offers tours.
  • Sailors and airmen at SampsonSampson State Park lies along Seneca Lake's eastern shore, on ground where the Sampson Naval Base trained sailors in World War II and the Sampson Air Force Base served in the Korean War. Beside the park, the first New York State veterans cemetery covers 162 acres.
  • Willard on Seneca LakeThe hamlet of Willard, in the town's southwest corner on the Seneca Lake shore, holds the town's government offices. It was long home to Willard State Hospital, a state mental hospital. In 1995 the state prison system turned it into a drug treatment center, and the state closed that center in March 2023.
