About Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico

The Spanish conquistador Oñate reached this pueblo on July 11, 1598. The people were hospitable and offered his party another pueblo as guest quarters. On July 12 he renamed it San Juan de los Caballeros, after John the Baptist. It became the first capital of Spanish New Mexico. The capital moved to Santa Fe in 1610.

The community was long called San Juan Pueblo, a name from the Spanish settlement of the 1600s. In December 2005, the Governor of New Mexico made the change to Ohkay Owingeh official.
