About Alcalde, New Mexico

Alcalde is a community of 310 people in Rio Arriba County, in northern New Mexico. Its name is the Spanish word for mayor. In Tewa the place is called Anųbúuˀú. In 1598 Juan de Oñate led nearly 500 people north to settle this part of New Mexico. It was the last such venture that Spain paid for.

About a century later, in 1703, Los Luceros was built on Capitan Sebastian Martin Serrano's land grant. This 18th-century Spanish hacienda has 5 buildings and is now a historic site. The Oñate Monument Center stands in Alcalde on New Mexico Highway 68.

“O'Keeffe made frequent visits to stay with Garland and Rodakiewicz at their H&M Ranch in Alcalde, where she met and became friends with Rodakiewicz's mother, Erla, a former social worker born in Poland.”

  • A feast day play from 1780Every December 27, Alcalde holds a feast day. The main event is Los Comanches, a play in verse written in 1780. Villagers act it out each year. It is based on real events and shows the Spanish army beating the Comanche leader Green Horn.
  • The Oñate statue comes downNative Americans and Hispanics had long disagreed about how Spain took over New Mexico. Oñate's harsh rule as governor helped begin centuries of Spanish control. In the summer of 2020, Alcalde's leaders took down the town's statue of him. Later that same day, shots were fired in Albuquerque at a protest calling for another Oñate statue to be removed. Both statues came down that summer.
  • Painted by O'Keeffe in 1931Georgia O'Keeffe painted the Spanish Mission Church just outside Alcalde in 1931. She named the oil painting Near Alcalde, New Mexico. It now belongs to the Yale University Art Gallery.
