About Hernandez, New Mexico

Hernandez is an unincorporated community of 756 people in Rio Arriba County, about 5 miles northwest of Española on the road shared by US 84 and US 285. Its children attend Hernandez Elementary, and older students go on to Española Valley High School in the Española Public Schools. In 1931 Georgia O'Keeffe came to the village to paint, and in 1941 Ansel Adams pulled off that same highway to photograph it.

“Late on the afternoon of October 31, 1941, as Ansel Adams returned from photographing in northern New Mexico, he noticed the moon rising above the mountains, illuminating the village of Hernandez along with its church and cemetery. He and his companions stopped the car and Adams quickly set up his 8 x 10 view camera to make a picture.”

  • A record price in 1971Adams called his picture Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, and it made the village famous. In 1971 a print of it that he had made in 1948 sold at auction for $71,500, a price nobody had paid for a photograph before, and the sale set off a rise in what collectors would pay for photographs. The same print sold again at Sotheby's in New York in 2006, this time for $609,600.
  • O'Keeffe's adobe churchGeorgia O'Keeffe visited Hernandez in 1931 and painted Another Church, Hernandez, New Mexico. The canvas shows the front of an adobe church in the village, along with a partial view of its interior.
