About Ojo Caliente, New Mexico

Ojo Caliente is a community of 135 people in Taos County, on the Rio Ojo Caliente about 50 miles north of Santa Fe. Its Spanish name means hot spring, and long before Spanish settlers arrived, the Tewa village of Posi-ouinge stood here beside those springs.

Settlers began arriving as early as 1735. They were genizaros, Native Americans mostly descended from slaves, along with Hispanos, and they were placed on the frontier to shield New Mexico from Comanche raids. The Spanish government gave genizaros a land grant here in 1754, and by 1766 the settlement had a fort and punished anyone who tried to leave. The raids still won out, and in 1779 Governor Juan Bautista de Anza reported the place deserted. After a lasting peace with the Comanche, eighteen families from Bernalillo moved back in 1790, and a state marker dates permanent settlement to 1793.

“Here we had a dance which is called the Fandango...the village may contain 500 souls.”

  • Zebulon Pike in 1807Major Zebulon Pike came through in 1807 and described a walled village. Its one-story adobe houses were joined together so that their outer walls made a square, and more streets of houses ran inside it. He judged the warm springs the most remarkable natural sight in the place, each one strong enough to turn a mill.
  • Frank Mauro's springsTewa tradition held that the pools here opened onto the underworld. The springs later became a health resort, among the first on the continent, and Frank Mauro bought them in 1932. His family ran the resort for three generations, and its buildings are on the National Register as Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.
  • A round barn from 1924The Ojo Caliente Hot Springs Round Barn was built near the resort in 1924. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places alongside the resort's buildings.
  • Farms on the acequiasOjo Caliente sits at 6,300 feet and gets about 11 inches of rain and snow a year. Most of the community is small farms, watered by acequias, the irrigation ditches that carry water out of the Rio Ojo Caliente.
