About Okanogan, Washington
Okanogan is a city of 2,379 people and the county seat of Okanogan County, on the west bank of the Okanogan River. In 1886 Frank J. "Pard" Cummings opened a small trading post where Salmon Creek meets the river. He got his nickname because he called everyone else "Pard." More settlers followed, Cummings began running a ferry, and by 1888 the settlement was called Alma, for Alma Kahlow, the daughter of an early resident. Cummings served as its first postmaster.
When Alma was platted in 1904 it had a hotel, a general store and a livery barn. In 1905 the Interior Department approved the Okanogan Irrigation Project, the first Reclamation Service project in Washington, and the town renamed itself Pogue for Dr. J. I. Pogue, an orchard grower who had helped bring the project here. At a town meeting in early 1907, residents voted 39-2 to drop that name for Okanogan, and the town was incorporated on October 29, 1907. Dr. Pogue felt snubbed and platted a new town about five miles upriver, which became Omak and had outgrown Okanogan by 1930.

- Before the townFor thousands of years the Southern Okanogan Tribe, also called the Sinkaietk, camped and fished for steelhead and salmon on this ground. Starting around 1855, miners bound for the Cariboo gold fields of British Columbia and cattlemen driving herds to feed them followed the old trail up the river.
- Promises that came lateHarry J. Kerr stepped off a steamboat in May 1906, started a bank and later became the town's first mayor. Boosters told him the government would water 10,000 acres, the railroad was on its way and the South Half of the Colville Reservation would open soon. Writing in 1931, he noted that the project watered about half that land, the railroad took seven years and the reservation opened ten years later.
- County seat since 1914The first county seats, Ruby and then Conconully, were mining towns in the mountains. When the Great Northern railroad finally reached Okanogan in 1914, the town ran a spirited campaign and took the county seat away from Conconully. The county courthouse built in 1915 still stands over the city, and the Okanogan County Courthouse joined the National Register in 1995.
- Murals found in 2022The pioneer photographer Frank S. Matsura, an immigrant from Japan, opened a studio here in 1907. In January 2022, workers renovating a commercial building from that same year found two murals, each 60 feet long, on the walls of what had been the Hub Theater. They were first credited to Matsura, who had played onstage there with the Okanogan County Band, but further research traced them to W.J. McConnon, a painter from Wenatchee.
