About Orofino, Idaho

Orofino is a city of 2,656 people and the county seat of Clearwater County, where Orofino Creek meets the north bank of the Clearwater River. Its name is Spanish for "fine gold." The name first belonged to Oro Fino, a gold mining camp founded in 1861 about two miles south of Pierce.

In November 1895 the federal government opened the Nez Perce reservation to outside settlers, and thousands of people hurried to claim land. Clifford P. Fuller homesteaded the unallotted strip where the town now stands and opened a trading post on it. The town, first called Orofino-on-the-Clearwater, was founded a year later, and in 1899 a railroad line reached it from Lewiston. That line later became part of the Camas Prairie Railroad.

  • Lewis and Clark's Canoe CampIn the fall of 1805 the Lewis and Clark expedition stopped near here, at a spot now called Canoe Camp. The men built five new dugout canoes, and on October 7, 1805, they pushed off down the river on the last leg of their trip to the Pacific Ocean.
  • Dworshak DamAbout four miles north of town stands Dworshak Dam, finished in the early 1970s and the third-highest dam in the United States. The Dworshak National Fish Hatchery nearby was started to make up for the migratory fish lost upstream once the dam was built.
  • Idaho's hottest dayOn July 28, 1934, Orofino reached 118 Β°F, the highest temperature ever recorded anywhere in Idaho.
  • Lumberjack DaysEach late summer Orofino hosts Lumberjack Days and the Clearwater County Fair, and the town also throws a Fourth of July celebration every year.
