About Othello, Washington

Othello is a city of 8,549 people in Adams County, on the western edge of the Columbia Plateau above Crab Creek. Water was so scarce that Native trails and an 1859 Army road passed by without anyone staying long. Homesteaders finally clustered a few farmhouses here by 1903, and that year they petitioned for a post office. Nettie B. Chavis suggested Othello, the name of a post office she had known while growing up in Tennessee.

In 1906 the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway sent surveyors, who marked out a route a little downhill from the post office. The next year the company chose the site as the east end of its Coast Division, where crews and locomotives would trade places. The railroad kept the Othello name for the town it platted, and Othello was incorporated in 1910 with about 400 people. Irrigation water from the Columbia Basin Project arrived in May 1953, and the dusty farms around town soon turned green.

“Clouds had a tendency to split and bypass the Panhandle, where Othello would later take root and grow”
Gladys Para, History of Adams County
  • Electric trains from 1920In 1920 the Milwaukee Road electrified its line from Othello to Tacoma. Trains arriving from the east swapped their steam engines here for electric ones, which drew power from overhead wires to climb the Boylston and Cascade mountains. The company went bankrupt in 1925, but the Othello yards stayed busy until the Milwaukee Road shut down in 1980.
  • Callboys and a bonfireSchoolboys called callboys tracked the railroad crews' schedules and pounded on their hotel doors so the men would get to work on time. When electricity reached town in 1931 from a Milwaukee Road substation, residents celebrated with a bonfire on Main Street. When World War II began, the yards still kept over a hundred men at work in three shifts around the clock.
  • 42 names drawn for landOnce irrigation was on the way, Othello held a land drawing on May 31, 1952. More than 7000 names were submitted, and 42 were picked for the right to buy the newly watered acreage.
  • The Chef Ready fry factoryIn 1961 Othello Packers began processing peas, carrots and corn at the edge of town. Three years later the Chef Ready french fry factory opened, started by farmer Peter J. Taggares, and more potato plants followed. Othello now produces about 15 percent of the french fries eaten in the United States.
  • Sandhill cranes since 1998Every year Othello holds the Sandhill Crane Festival, which began in 1998. It celebrates the cranes that return each season to the nearby Columbia National Wildlife Refuge.
