About Oxford, Ohio
Oxford is a Butler County city whose growth has long centered on Miami University. Founded in 1810 as the university's home, it had 23,035 residents in the 2020 census. Its streets and campuses preserve histories of education, publishing, civil rights, and beekeeping.
- College Town OriginsThe Ohio legislature chartered Miami University in 1809, and Oxford was laid out the following year with 128 lots.
- McGuffey ReadersWilliam Holmes McGuffey assembled the first McGuffey Eclectic Reader at his East Spring Street home in 1836.
- Freedom SummerWestern College for Women hosted orientation sessions for the Freedom Summer civil rights campaign in June 1964.
