About Ozona, Texas
Ozona is the county seat of Crockett County, Texas, and the only community in the county that the Census Bureau recognizes. It had 2,663 people in 2020. The county itself is named for Davy Crockett, a hero of the Alamo.
The town began in 1891 as Powell Well. E. M. Powell, a land surveyor, sank a well beside Johnson Draw and raised a windmill over it. He then promised water, along with land for a courthouse, a jail, a school, churches and parks. His agent, Joe Moss, sold the lots, and the first settlers planted pecan trees in the thin soil. In 1897 the town took the name Ozona, for its abundance of open air, or ozone.
- The Ozona Kicker, 1892Claude B. Hudspeth, born in 1877, started a weekly paper called the Ozona Kicker in 1892. He owned it for three years and then went into politics, serving in the Texas Legislature and later representing the Sixteenth Texas District in Congress. In 1913 County Judge Charles E. Davidson bought the paper and renamed it the Ozona Stockman, to honor the cattlemen and ranchers who built Crockett County.
- The flood of 1954Most of Ozona sits in the valley of Johnson Draw, which drains south into the Devils River and from there to the Rio Grande. In 1954 a flood killed 16 people here and wiped out about half of the town's homes.
- State champion Lady LionsOzona's Lady Lions won Class 2A state titles in basketball in 1995 and 1996, then in golf in 1997. The Lions later won state team championships in cross-country, in Class 2A in 2004 and in Class 1A in 2013.
