About Sheffield, Texas

Sheffield is a community of 174 people on the eastern edge of Pecos County, close to the Pecos River. In 1590 the Spanish explorer Gaspar Castaño de Sosa led his men up the Pecos, the earliest Europeans known to have reached this ground, but neither he nor the Spanish parties that came later built a settlement. In 1849 the Army surveyed a road from San Antonio to El Paso, and it ran through this spot because of Pecos Spring and a river crossing named for nearby Fort Lancaster.

John Cannon, the first settler, arrived in 1888 and bought land along the Pecos River. A post office opened in 1898 with the rancher Will Sheffield as postmaster, and around 1900 a small town grew up on his land beside the Cannon ranch and took his name. Nearby ranchers came to it for supplies and company, and after oil was found in the Trans-Pecos in the 1920s, followed later by natural gas, the local economy changed. Sheffield grew from about 124 people in 1925 to 350 by 1949, and in 2000 it had an estimated 600 residents and 15 businesses.

  • Sheep to the Pecos in 1886William Franklin Smith, an early pioneer, brought a flock of sheep west from near Sherwood, in Irion County, all the way to the Pecos River. In the spring of 1886 he made camp at Pecos. He returned to Pecos County several times before settling in Sheffield for good in 1912.
  • Black Jack Ketchum's refugeMost newcomers were ranchers who claimed their own homesteads, but a few early pioneers were later said to be outlaws who had come this far to escape the law. Tom "Black Jack" Ketchum spent time around Sheffield in the 1890s and went on to become a notorious outlaw wanted in several states.
  • On the Old Spanish TrailDuring the 1920s Sheffield turned into a modest stop on the Old Spanish Trail, a road that ran across the continent. Travelers could stay at the OST Courts, one of the local motels, and its old sign still stood on Main Street near Avenue E in 2023.
  • Frontier Days in SheffieldHerbert A. Holmes and his family came to Sheffield in 1906, and for a long stretch of years he served Pecos County as a justice of the peace. Over his life he gathered facts, memories and photographs of the town, and in 1973 he and his son J. Wayne Holmes published them as the book Frontier Days in Sheffield.
