About Packanack Lake, New Jersey
Packanack Lake is a lake community of 6,261 people in Wayne, in Passaic County. Its name comes from the Pacquanacs, a Native American people who farmed, fished and hunted on this land. Their name is said to mean "land made clear for cultivation," and the community still carries it today.
In 1925 Joseph T. Castles bought 26 farms, about 700 acres of ridges and the marshy valley between them, because he wanted to build a model community. In 1928 crews cleared the valley of trees and brush and closed its south end with an earth and clay dam, so the lake is man-made. Packanack Lake Inc. also laid out roads and put up a clubhouse, cabins and houses, and on opening day, May 6, 1928, the country club and association already had 600 members.
- Washington's headquarters nearbyIn 1780 this was farm country and marshland, and French and American soldiers of the Continental Army camped not far away. General George Washington kept his headquarters at the Dey Mansion, and the Marquis de Lafayette stayed at the Van Saun House. Both houses can still be seen today.
- Sand from the Jersey ShoreTo turn the new lake into a summer retreat, the developers hauled in beach sand from the Jersey Shore and stocked the water with fish. They also gave members tennis courts, a bathhouse and polo grounds.
- Two beaches and the PiratesThe lake has two beaches, one on Lake Drive East and the other on Lake Drive West, and residents hold band concerts, craft shows and bonfires at both. Children take sailing and golf lessons in summer, and the lake's swim team, the Packanack Pirates, races competitively. Dues paid to the Packanack Lake Association keep the lake and its activities going.
