About Paintsville, Kentucky

Paintsville is a city of 4,312 people and the seat of Johnson County, on the bottomland where Paint Creek joins the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. In 1750 Dr. Thomas Walker's party from Virginia, the first recorded expedition into eastern Kentucky, camped on this ground. By 1780 U.S. Army dispatches mentioned a Paint Lick Station, named for the pictures that tribes had painted on stripped tree trunks near a salt lick.

The land belonged to George Lewis as part of a tract of 19,050 acres. Henery Dixon of North Carolina bought the trading post in 1812 and laid it out as a town in 1826, and the town was formally established as Paint Lick Station in 1834. In 1843 it was incorporated under the name Paintsville, and that same year it became the county seat.

  • Garfield ends a flag banWhen the Civil War began, the Johnson County Fiscal Court passed an ordinance that kept both Union and Confederate flags from flying in the county. The ban didn't last. Col. James A. Garfield, the future president, led his brigade into Paintsville, and the court quickly repealed it.
  • John C. C. Mayo's townThe businessman John C. C. Mayo built his mansion here between 1905 and 1912, and it now houses Our Lady of the Mountains School. He also hired one hundred Italian masons for the Mayo Methodist Church, which held its first service in the fall of 1909 and has stained glass windows and a pipe organ given by Andrew Carnegie. The mansion and office joined the National Register in 1974, and the church in 1989.
  • A modern city, 1902 to 1926First National, the city's first bank, opened in 1902, and its building still stands downtown. Telephone service came in 1906, and two years later the city finished paving its streets. Electricity and natural gas arrived in 1912, and in 1926 residents got public water and the city set up its fire department.
  • Kentucky Apple Festival since 1962Every year since 1962, Paintsville has held the Kentucky Apple Festival on the first full weekend in October. It brings live music, carnival rides, a pageant, contests, a parade and a car show to town.
