About Prestonsburg, Kentucky
Prestonsburg is a city of 3,681 people and the county seat of Floyd County, on the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. In the early 1700s this land fell within a 100,000-acre grant to the family of Elizabeth Patton, which her husband, John Preston, managed for her. French and Indian resistance and a shift in British policy held back settlement, so nobody settled here until John Spurlock came from Montgomery County, Virginia, in 1791.
Spurlock laid out a town called Preston's Station in 1797. When Floyd County was formed in 1799, the town became its seat, and it was formally established in 1818. Its post office opened in 1816 under the name Floyd Court House and took the name Prestonsburg in the late 1820s.
- The Samuel May HouseSamuel May built his house in 1817 from bricks made on the site, and no older brick home is known in the Big Sandy Valley. In the Civil War it was a Confederate recruiting station where the 10th Kentucky Cavalry and the Confederate 5th Kentucky Infantry were organized. Families lived there until 1981. It joined the National Register in 1980, passed to the City of Prestonsburg in 1992 and was restored as a living history museum.
- Battle of Middle Creek, 1862On January 10, 1862, the biggest Civil War fight in Eastern Kentucky took place at Middle Creek, near town. The ground is now preserved as Middle Creek National Battlefield.
- Books on horsebackIn the late 1930s Prestonsburg had a pack horse library, which carried books and other reading to families living in the rural mountains around the town.
- Home of the Kentucky OpryThe Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg hosts concerts and is home to the Kentucky Opry. For over 40 years the Jenny Wiley Theatre staged Broadway musicals, holiday shows, comedies and historical dramas, both there and at the outdoor amphitheater in Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. The East Kentucky Science Center opened in town in 2004 with a planetarium among the most advanced in the nation.
