About Palermo, New Jersey
Palermo is a community of 3,183 people in Upper Township, Cape May County, about 14 miles northeast of Cape May Court House. Henry Young reached New Jersey on a whaling ship before 1700 and started a plantation that stretched west from Palermo. In 1695 John Corson Sr. bought a 300-acre tract here from the West New Jersey Society. His family had moved to Cape May from Long Island near the end of the 1600s.
Over the next two centuries the settlement filled in. The Friendship School went up around 1830, and Palermo got its own post office in 1872. In 1897 the Ocean City Railroad ran a line through the village and built a station, and that line later joined the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines before it was abandoned.
“the parkway went through the center of his piggery”
- The Corson house, about 1710John Corson Jr. built his house about 1710 on part of his father's 300-acre tract. The record of his belongings made at his death in 1739 counted livestock, tools for farming and for making shoes, and seven gallons of rum. Digging behind the back door later turned up a 1787 large cent. The John Corson Jr. House Site is on the National Register.
- Friendship School, about 1830The Friendship School was built in Palermo around 1830 and ranks among the oldest schools in Upper Township. It was restored in 1980.
- A highway fight in 1953In 1953 planners wanted to extend the Garden State Parkway through Palermo. Farmers across Upper Township objected to the route, and one Palermo farmer said the road would cut right through his pig farm. To end the arguments, a commission was set up to settle the disputes between the farmers and the Parkway Authority.
