About Strathmere, New Jersey
Strathmere was first a community called Corson's Inlet, after the waterway between the island and Ocean City. In 1905, Upper Township bought Corson's Inlet from Sea Isle City. The money helped Sea Isle City clear its town debt. In 1912, the community took the new name Strathmere.
In 2007, residents of Strathmere and Whale Beach asked to leave Upper Township and join Sea Isle City. They said taxes were unfair and police were slow to arrive. The courts ruled against them in 2010, and the state Supreme Court denied their appeal in January 2013.
- Name origin of a local neighborhoodThe Whale Beach section of Strathmere is named for whales. Over the years, whales would sometimes wash up and strand themselves on its sand.
