About Palos Heights, Illinois
Palos Heights is a Cook County city with 12,068 residents recorded in the 2020 census. German and Irish families cultivated parts of the area from the 1860s, while nearby hills served as pasture. Incorporated in April 1959, the community later transformed land beside the Cal-Sag Channel into Lake Katherine.
- Fourth BallotVoters approved incorporation on the fourth attempt, 850 to 684, and Palos Heights officially became a city on April 16, 1959.
- First MayorZ. Erol Smith became the city's first mayor and served until 1973 after winning three reelections.
- Bible TranslationA 1965 gathering of scholars in Palos Heights helped initiate the New International Version of the Bible.
- Lake KatherineBeginning in the late 1980s, the city redeveloped Cal-Sag Channel land into Lake Katherine, later managed by a nonprofit nature center.
- Rail ConnectionThe Palos Heights station provides Metra SouthWest Service between Manhattan and Chicago Union Station.
