About Paris, Tennessee

Paris is a city of 10,316 people and the county seat of Henry County, in West Tennessee. At the December 1822 session of the county court, five commissioners were given the job of choosing a seat of justice, and they picked 50 acres then covered with wild pea vines and poplar timber. Joseph Blythe owned 37.5 acres and Peter Ruff the other 12.5, and both gave their land to the county so the seat would be built there.

Early in 1823 the commissioners laid out a public square, streets, alleys and 104 lots, which sold at a two-day auction that spring. The courthouse went up that same year, and on September 30, 1823, Paris became the first incorporated town in West Tennessee, ahead of Lexington in 1824 and Memphis in 1826. The town took its name from Paris, France, honoring the Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette.

  • A mill and a blacksmithAbout 1823, while the town was being laid out, Charles Crutchfield built Henry County's first water-powered grist mill, a mile northeast of Paris. David Lemonds first settled on Town Creek, then moved into Paris, where he was working as a blacksmith by 1827. In 1860 the railroad was finished through the county, and Paris got one of its stations.
  • Grove's medicine and a schoolEdwin Wiley Grove founded the Paris Medicine Company in 1886. Twenty years later, in 1906, he endowed a high school that carried his name, and the E. W. Grove Henry County High School building joined the National Register in 1980.
  • Governor James D. PorterJames Davis Porter was born in Paris in 1828 and won a seat in the state legislature in 1859. He went on to serve as judge of the 12th Judicial Circuit and as governor of Tennessee, then came home, and he died at his house in Paris in 1912.
  • Schools joined in the 1960sSince the Civil War, about 15% of the town's people have been African American, and until the early 1960s Black children went to separate schools. Starting in that decade, the city and Henry County combined their schools, sending buses out to the far corners of the county to bring every child to integrated schools in Paris. The change, like the slow integration of local businesses in the same years, came largely in peace.
  • Its own Eiffel TowerIn the early 1990s, students at Christian Brothers University built a 65-foot wooden Eiffel Tower, and it was set up in Eiffel Tower Park on the south side of town. A 70-foot metal tower, a scale model of the original, later replaced it.
