About Park Forest Village, Pennsylvania
Park Forest Village is a community of 8,831 people in Patton and Ferguson townships, Centre County, on the northwest edge of State College. Its planners spent nearly a decade preparing the land before anyone moved in. In 1956 Mr. and Mrs. Lyle E. Shoot became the first family to live there, at 1882 Park Forest Avenue.
No suburb of this size had been built near State College before, and the new homes found buyers fast. Developer J. Alvin Hawbaker kept building after the Shoots arrived, and by 1960 almost 200 homes were either occupied or under construction.
- Curved streets and saved treesCarl Wild of State College planned the land, and Charles M. Goodman, an architect from Washington, D.C., designed the houses and the site plan. Most suburbs built after World War II used straight streets and cut down every tree. Goodman's plan curved the streets and kept the trees standing, and later developments copied the idea.
- Two national awards by 1960Only four years after the first family moved in, Park Forest Village had already won two national awards for its site planning.
- Home to the high schoolPark Forest Village belongs to the State College Area School District, and two of its schools stand here: Park Forest Middle School and State College Area High School.
