About Park Ridge, New Jersey

Park Ridge is a borough of 8,883 people in Bergen County, in the Pascack Valley. Voters approved a referendum to leave Washington Township, and on May 15, 1894, the day after the vote, the New Jersey Legislature created the new borough. That year a wave called "Boroughitis" swept the county, and Bergen County formed 26 boroughs in 1894 alone. The borough takes its name from its location.

  • The world's only wampum drillThe Campbell Brothers of Park Ridge found a way to bore through long hair pipe shells, so Plains Indians and others could string them into breastplates. The work needed water, so the brothers leased a woolen mill on the Pascack Brook. After it burned, they built their own mill downstream on their land and a shop on Pascack Road near their homestead. They hid the unpatented machines upstairs. One survives at the Pascack Historical Society Museum, 19 Ridge Avenue.
  • Wampum for John Jacob AstorIn the early 19th century John Jacob Astor bought wampum from the Campbells. He traded it to Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest for beaver pelts, and the pelts became men's hats. The wampum trade had its best years between 1835 and 1866.
  • Home of HertzThe Hertz Corporation, the car rental company, had its headquarters in the borough and paid more in taxes than anyone else there. On May 7, 2013, Hertz said it would move its corporate headquarters to Estero, Florida, while keeping some of its operations in Park Ridge.
